My Dufferin
Co-operative council needed to attract doctors

Dear Editor,
On July 10, I attended the County Council meeting. At that time, there was a delegation presentation by Dr. David Scott and Ms. Louise Kindree regarding the recruitment of physicians to underserviced areas.
One councillor’s dramatics and accusations, in my opinion, did not do justice to either the office being represented or to the volunteer committee. This committee’s function is to encourage prospective physicians to locate to Dufferin County. It is the responsibility of the individual municipalities to negotiate arrangements with the prospective physician. The final decision rests with the individual doctors to decide if or where they prefer to locate their practice.
Although council was not united on this issue, it remains that all of the councillors have the common goal of obtaining doctors for their particular area. I empathize with the frustration experienced by all of council members as was expressed at the meeting, However, in my opinion, it would appear that a county-wide designation and a co-operative effort would appear to be a more advantageous approach to attract new physicians to the area.
