Orangeville boy charged
A 17-year-old Orangeville boy was charged with making an improper turn last Friday (July 25), after two vehicles were severely damaged in a collision.
The incident occurred on John Street, at the Little York Street cross section, at about 5 p.m. Orangeville police say a left-turning 2003 Dodge Caravan entered the path of an oncoming 2001 Pontiac Sunfire.
A passenger in the Sunfire, a 51-year-old woman, was taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Cyclist struck on Broadway
Two people were taken to hospital Sunday morning (July 27), after a vehicle struck a passing cyclist and crashed into a bus shelter. No charges have been laid.
Police say a 42-year-old Orangeville woman was pulling out of a Broadway parking lot, near John Street, at about 11 a.m. when a westbound cyclist on the sidewalk crossed in front of her.
After striking the cyclist with her 1995 Buick, police say the woman accidentally hit the gas instead of the break and drove into a bus shelter across the street.
Both the cyclist, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, and driver were taken to hospital by ambulance and treated for minimal injuries. Damage to the bicycle and Buick is described as light.
The bus shelter, with windows smashed and inside bench curled up, was initially blocked off with yellow tape. It has since been completely removed.
Erin woman charged with racing
A 22-year-old Erin woman had her licence suspended and vehicle seized for a week July 23, after Wellington OPP laid a racing charge.
According to police, a 2008 Mazda M3 was pulled over on Wellington Road 124, near Third Line, at about 8:30 p.m. travelling 138 km/h in a posted 80 zone.
Michelle Ferguson is charged.
Grand Valley man nabbed at RIDE
Police laid a pair of alcohol-related driving charges against a Grand Valley man last weekend, during a RIDE spot check in West Garafraxa Township.
Officers say they spoke with the driver of a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck at about 9:10 p.m., while running RIDE on Wellington Road 26, east of Fergus. The officers allegedly noted the driver had been drinking and administered a roadside breath/alcohol screening test, which resulted in a “fail.”
The suspect was subsequently taken to provide formal samples for testing.
Norman Garry Mortimer, 47, of Grand Valley is charged with driving a motor vehicle with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 mls of blood and driving with open liquor.
Driver arrested after refusing to supply breath samples
A weaving car prompted an alert motorist to call police early Saturday morning, leading to the arrest of an Orangeville man.
Wellington OPP stopped a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire on Wellington Road 109, east of Arthur at about 3:30 a.m. An investigation led police to suspect the driver had been drinking, which prompted a request for breath samples.
The driver allegedly refused to provide those samples and was subsequently charged. Guy Arthur David Rail, 30, of Orangeville faces one count of refuse breath sample.
